The criteria and system for procurement of protected vehicles for the Bundeswehr, with a balance between mobility and protection and bearing in mind the most likely future operations, are described in this article.
German Army Perspective on Requirements for Protected Vehicle Systems
Operations are the starting point and benchmark for all measures taken to improve Army capabilities. Due to financial and time constraints, the focus needs to be on improving the capabilities essential for the most likely operations.
Strategic and operational deployability and above all the tactical mobility of the units are an absolute prerequisite for all Army operations. As a consequence, the tactical vehicles must be transportable, for example by sea, air or land. Notably the tactical deployment options using the Bundeswehr air transport assets, such as the CH-53 medium transport helicopter, the C-160 Transall transport aircraft and in future the new A400M are a decisive criterion in the selection of new vehicles.
Moreover, each Army vehicle must also be capable of being used off paved roads, under extreme geographic, infrastructural and climatic conditions. At the same time, mission- and threat-appropriate protection for our servicewomen and men is an essential prerequisite for accomplishing the armed forces’ mission.
