Islam instituted a continuity, not a breach, with the other monotheistic religions. So ‘Islamism’ cannot justify its war against Jews and Christians, who are also ‘people of the scripture’, on the basis of the Koran. Islam and the majority of Muslims are therefore against Islamism; this is a crisis, not a clash, of civilisations.
Islam and ‘Islamism’-a Study
More often than not, Islam and Muslims are viewed emotionally: there is a tendency to confound Islam and ‘Islamism’, ‘Islamism’ and ‘terrorism’, ‘terrorism’ and national liberation movements, jihad and ‘holy war’, and the Islamic religion and violence. Within the ‘Muslim world’, peoples and governments, confronted by immeasurable difficulties that they fail to overcome, adopt the easy solution of assigning blame to outsiders, obstinately rejecting any self-criticism.
A thorough understanding of Islam can be highly instructive and encourages a positive attitude towards the other religions of the ‘Book’. To achieve this, one needs merely to refer to the Koran,(1) to the Sunnah,(2) never losing sight of the context of the time, and never forgetting the historical experience marked by centuries of peaceful coexistence.
