A reflection prompted by Mustapha Benchenane’s article ‘Islam and “Islamism”—a study’, which appeared in Défense nationale et sécurité collective, February 2009.
Islam and Islamism
In the February 2009 issue of Défense nationale et sécurité collective, Mustapha Benchenane sustained the thesis of a tolerant and peaceful Islam which has been hijacked by the Islamists. While his argument is convincing, the problem he poses nevertheless needs to be developed further.
He bases his arguments on two hypotheses:
• His ‘positive’ and pacific vision of the Koran needs to be shared by all Muslims, who need to be aware of the context in which the Koran was first written.
• The Koran is coherent in itself, and with the other Books of the Bible.
