The attacks of 11 September 2001 transformed the global political and economic situation. They confirmed that modern transport systems were prime targets; this is especially true of civil aviation, because of its symbolic status, media significance and economic and financial impact in Western countries. Faced with the still significant terrorist threat against civil aviation, it is appropriate to examine the technological arsenal that is now available or could be developed.
New Technologies for Aircraft Access Control
We know that civil aviation has been a prime terrorist target since the middle of the 1960s.
The frequency of terrorist attacks has reduced overall since the 1970s. However, the number of victims has fluctuated between 0 and 20, with a significant peak on 11 September 2001.
The means employed to select and attack targets has changed little. Airports, aircraft and installations located outside airports, such as airline offices, continue to be the terrorists’ main targets. Explosives, aircraft hijacking and armed aggression are the usual methods of attack.
